Japanese Kai Gunto Sword 29 58 Samurai SurrenderedThis is truly a unique, original hand forged sword. It has never been out of my possession or the veterans since it was surrendered at sea. The colonel brought home two swords, this is the one presented to him by his japanese counterpart during the ceremony with mac arthur as patr of his g4 section. Full info/provenance will be provided to the buyer upon completion of teh auction. Only two things are missing from the sword and only one added. Originally there was a tassle and saya cover, both lost before the sword was passed on to em by my friend the colonel. I added the gold seppas because the tusba was loose. Other wise the sword has remained the same all these years. eH passed back in 97.
Before that began my study of teh japanese sword and what it represents. This is a very seriosu sword and i hope only a conscientious collector wins it in the end.
I have been very fortunate to have owned this sword. As yuo can see it is mounted as kai gunto but in extreme length. The tsuka is unlike normal design, much more beeyf with unusual taper. The blade is kanbun shinto. Nagasa=75.2 or 29 5/8. Kissaki 3.2cm. Thickness. 8cm or. 9cm.
Width 3.2. Sori si 1. Planes/geometry or great and it hsa a flared or thickened tip. Original war time or oldre polish, its quite good. Had i chosen to keep the blade it likely would not be submitted for oplish for a very long time if ever.
I should add the i can very much appreciate swords in art polish. Hamon is straight, very clear and wraps around the tip, back past the kissaki along the back edge. Grain is ivsible with no openings. The blade is massive, thick, straight and smooth but feels right. It has a cutting test inscribed, mitsu do ochiru (cut three bodies) teikyo 5, the end of may (1688), matsumoto chodaiyu masatomo (kao) person who did the cutting test. The blade appears to be o-suriage. Nakago is chocolate colored. It is the only sword i have had the inclination to rest vertically against my shoulder when i walk with it. I haev struggled over keeping this sword, knowing that once it is gone it is likely gone forever. I had to satisfy my curiosity and submitted it for shinsa. Result was a score of 74, to ishido unjyu korekazu, bunkyu period. Hawley rates 40pts for example and i have yet to see korekazu not mentioned well in any reference book i have or have used. I have been told that korekazu likely made this sword for a very special buyer, to avoid the ban of sword production and as tribute to prior sword smiths. I suppose its possible shinsa is wrong but the blade cretaed quite a stir. I will place my personal guarantee on my discription and have photographed to the best of my ability. I will post all photos of the sword on our web site. I apologize for teh quality of my photographs. All spelling errors are mine, i didn't have my young rbide of 20yrs proof read this-my sense is she won't be happy im selling it but it is time.
